Your first visit to The Prancing Pup

Here's everything you need to know before your dog's first appointment. No surprises.

What to expect

Whether your dog has been groomed before or this is their very first time, the approach is the same. Calm, unhurried, and personal. There are no other dogs in the studio during your dog's session, and there's no rushing to get to the next client.

If you're not sure which service is right for your dog, or you have questions about your dog's coat type, temperament, or breed, just get in touch before you book. I'm happy to chat it through.

Is this your dog's very first groom?

First grooms are a bit different to regular grooming sessions. The goal isn't just a clean dog. It's making sure the experience is positive so that future visits are easy. We take it slowly, introduce the tools gradually, and keep everything calm. Read on for what to expect and how to prepare.

How a first visit works

Get in touch first

Drop me an email or use the contact form. Tell me a bit about your dog. Breed, age, coat type, and any quirks or worries you have. This helps me make sure the session is set up right from the start.

Bring your dog for drop-off

You drop your dog off at the studio in Sketty, Swansea. I'll have a quick chat with you, ask any last questions, and let your dog have a moment to settle in before we get started.

The groom happens at their pace

For first grooms, we go at whatever pace your dog is comfortable with. If they're anxious or unsure, we slow down. The aim is a positive experience. A proper groom will come with time.

Pick up a happy, freshened-up dog

I'll let you know when we're done. You collect your dog and I'll give you any feedback on their coat or how they got on, so you know what to expect next time.

How to prepare for the first visit

  • Give your dog a short walk before the appointment to help them arrive a bit calmer
  • Don't bathe your dog at home beforehand. Wet, matted coats are harder to work with
  • Try to brush your dog through if there are any tangles or knots
  • Let me know about any health conditions, skin sensitivities, or areas your dog doesn't like being touched
  • Make sure your puppy has completed their vaccination course before their first appointment

What about nervous or anxious dogs?

Lots of dogs find grooming stressful, especially if they've had a bad experience before. The home studio environment makes a real difference here. There are no other dogs, no salon noise, and no waiting around in a crate.

I work with nervous dogs regularly and I take my time with them. Just let me know when you get in touch and we'll plan the session with that in mind.

Is your dog's coat matted?

Matting can happen when coats aren't brushed regularly. In some cases, the kindest thing is to clip the coat short and start again rather than trying to brush through heavy matting, which is uncomfortable for your dog. If you're worried about this, mention it when you get in touch and I can give you an honest assessment before you commit to a booking.

Ready to book in?

Get in touch and we'll take it from there. No pressure, just a friendly conversation about what would suit your dog.
